The Department

Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is nationally recognized for its leadership in modern engineering research and education.  We are ranked first amoung U.S. chemical engineering departments in citations per publication in the latest ranking by University Science Indicators, as reported by SCI-BYTES. Our goal is to provide students with tools, experience, and adaptability to prosper not just as new graduates but throughout their careers.

Educational Programs

The undergraduate Chemical Engineering program is ABET accredited and designed to complement the freshman Engineering First Program in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Our program involves students, from the very beginning, in computer applications, design and communication. Advanced courses cover a wide range of technical content, while several non-technical courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level emphasize the development of management skills necessary for business-related careers. The graduate program is one of the highest ranked programs of its kind in the nation, and emphasizes both core chemical engineering training as well as interdisciplinary research on the cutting edge of the field.
