Professor McCarthy received his PhD from Northwestern in 1998, working with Professor Julio Ottino. He joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh that same year. The focus of Professor McCarthy's research is transport phenomena in particulate and/or discrete systems. A prevalent theme in his work is to study problems of fundamental engineering significance which nevertheless have clear implications for engineering practice. His approach to these problems includes computational, theoretical, and experimental aspects. Joe served as a teaching apprentice for the undergraduate heat transfer course under the guidance of Professor Lyle Mockros. He received a BS degree in chemical engineering from Notre Dame University.
