Sections VI-VII

VI. CROWN FAMILY GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

This elective program permits doctoral candidates to gain practical experience in industry or at national laboratories during the course of their studies. It is coordinated through the Office of Graduate Studies and Research of the McCormick School, and provides an infrastructure to ensure continuity of university registration and health coverage while students engage in internships. Such experience is often best suited for the middle to latter stages (e.g., 3rd year) of Ph.D. study. Internships may also be available for M.S. students. The 3 or 6 month full-time internship is generally a paid position. Internship opportunities may evolve within the context of a collaborative research project related to a student’s thesis research, but companies frequently announce internship opportunities where no prior research relationship exists. In either case, professional work in a non-academic setting provides students with valuable experience to complement their academic study.
