Research Interests

Michael began his career at Chevron, where he worked as a reservoir engineer performing steam-flood simulation studies and investigating the robustness and accuracy of numerical algorithms in predicting the flow of oil underground.

In 1986 he joined the Research and Development Center of the Amoco Chemicals Corporation, where he developed state-of-the-art software for the optimization of chemical processes, on-line models for the gas phase propylene polymerization and models for the para-xylene MC oxidation process. In 1996 Michael joined UOP, as a Senior Modeling and Optimization Specialist in the area of on-line modeling and optimization. In this capacity he developed models for the Catalytic Cracking, Hydrocracking, Reforming and Isomerization processes. In his most recent projects Michael developed state-of-the-art technology for Data Reconciliation, Nonlinear Optimization, Model Tuning and LP Vector Generation. He is currently a Research Fellow in charge of implementing advanced statistical methods for Optimal Experimental Design.

Michael is the author of ten publications, numerous presentations at National and International conferences, two patents, thirteen trade secrets and co-author of the book Computer-Aided Modeling of Reactive Systems, which introduces readers to powerful parameter estimation and computational methods for modeling complex reaction networks and reaction processes. He is an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University, where he teaches classes in Process Optimization, Nonlinear Parameter Estimation and Model Discrimination in conjunction with Optimal Experimental Design, Advanced Reactor Design and Fluid Mechanics.
