Undergraduate Program

Alumni Profiles: Alan Johnson, Class of 2002

Alan Johnson Current Position: Medical Student University of Minnesota Minneapolis, MN

What do you do in your current job? I just completed my first year of medical school at the University of Minnesota. Given my engineering and medical interests I sought an internship this summer with one of the biotech companies in the Twin Cities. Thankfully, Medtronic (the industry leader in pace makers) saw the value in my background and hired me for the summer in cardiac rhythm research. The summer should allow me to explore many career paths that combine engineering and medicine.

What do you like best about your position? What I like most is that I'm living the life that I've ideally envisioned: medical school challenges me in myriad ways and I can sense how I'm growing; I'm finding the time to train for triathlons, of which there are many in Minnesota; Minneapolis is a great city; and, I have many family members and loved ones close by (I'm originally from North Dakota).

What is your favorite NU memory? There are so many! My favorite times were traveling the country with fellow NU students on Alternative Spring Break trips. Including winter and spring breaks I went on six trips - everywhere from lower Manhattan to the shrimpin' bayou of Louisiana.

Advice to current students? Get to know as many NU students as you can. The university attracts many of the most inspiring people you'll ever meet. Take the time to get to know those students in theater, journalism, psychology, etc. They'll change your perspective on life.
