Undergraduate Program

Alumni Profiles: Gerrie Liaw, Class of 2000

Gerrie Liaw Current Position: Quality Engineer Abbott Laboratories Abbott Park, IL

What do you do in your current job? Since joining Abbott in 2000, I was involved with a drug delivery research group, focusing on implantable cardiovascular devices. In March 2003, I began working in cleaning validations in the Global Pharmaceutical Operations division Finished Goods Plant. Current job responsibilities include managing day-to-day cleaning validation activities and supporting improvement projects, which include developing a product family matrix, introducing phosphate-free detergents to the plant, coordinating efforts to determine surface area and product contact material of equipment, and developing sampling templates.

What do you like best about your position? My current position allows me to interact with a number of people in different positions. I am able to finally see how tablets and capsules are made from the powder or bulk drug.

What is your favorite NU memory? I recall many late night sessions working with my design group during senior year in the ChemE computer lab.

Advice to current students? During the summer, try to work as an intern in several different fields, such as research in academia, finance, or manufacturing. Gaining professional experience is important in starting your career. Take it easy with classes; take one over the summer if necessary, but make sure you do well!
