Alumni Profiles: Tara (Chhatpar) McCaughey, Class of 1994

Tara C. McCaughey Current Position: Engineering Team Leader ST Microelectronics

What do you do in your current job? ST manufactures semiconductors; most of the chips from the Phoenix site end up in cell phones and cars. My engineering team inspects the product throughout the line in order to improve the yield. I supervise the technicians who examine the material for defects, then synthesize the data, and make sure actions are being taken to fix problems. It requires a lot of communication of ideas and data across departments, especially when there's a new defect type whose source isn't known.

What do you like best about your position? Interacting with people on a daily basis, and solving new defect problems. It's like piecing together a puzzle.

What is your favorite NU memory? Marching in NUMB, bonfires on the lakefill.

Advice to current students? The keys to success in the workplace are the ability to communicate your ideas, and the ability to work well with people (even the difficult ones). Second piece of advice: after you graduate, take a long trip before you start your new job!
